USC junior Rebecca Soni broke a pair of Rolf Aquatic Center pool records and won three races while junior teammate Kristen Lahey also posted a trio of firsts on Friday (Nov. 19) as the Women of Troy defeated host Notre Dame, 158.50-103.50.
USC improved to 2-0 overall while Notre Dame fell to 0-1.
Soni claimed victories in the 100y (1:00.81) and 200y breast (2:11.47), recording NCAA automatic qualifying times in each of the races in excellent early-season swims. She is the two time NCAA defending champion in the latter distance. She also won the 200y IM in an NCAA consideration 2:03.88.
Lahey posted wins in the 100y back (55.05, NCAA `B' cut), the 100y free (51.06) and the 100y fly (55.96). In Lahey's win in the 100y back, sophomore Whitney Stephenson was second in 57.35. In Lahey's win in the 100y fly, senior Emily Goetsch was second (56.39).
Junior Rachel Waller won the 200y free in 1:49.45, just off her season-best time of 1:49.25, already an NCAA `B' cut.
Senior Whitney Hentzen also got in the win column, taking the 500y free in 4:52.92, an NCAA consideration mark.
Junior Katy Houston had a strong meet, posting NCAA consideration times in the 100y (1:03.26) and the 200y breast (2:16.83) in second-place efforts. She was also second to Soni in the 200y IM (2:06.23).
