The No. 6 USC women's golf team turned in its low round of the season and tied for its third lowest ever after firing a combined 283 to finish in first place after the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Championships Central Regional on Thursday (May 10) at the University of Michigan G.C. in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Freshman Belen Mozo carded a USC season-best 68 while junior Dewi Claire Schreefel turned in a personal season-best 69 to lead the Trojans into first with a six-shot lead. Indiana and TCU are tied for second (289) while Vanderbilt is fourth (290) and Arkansas is fifth (291).
Mozo, whose previous best on the season was a 72, fired a 3-under 69 that included three birdies on the front 9 and another on the 12th hole. Her only blemish on the day was a bogey on 18. She is tied for second, one stroke behind leader Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt.
Schreefel, who has finished no lower than a tie for 10th in four NCAA regional and final championship appearances, posted her first sub-70 round of the season with a 2-under 69 to tie for fifth. Like Mozo, she had three birdies during a 3-under front 9 and had one bogey on the back 9.
Junior Paola Moreno, USC's most consistent performer all year and among its top two finishers in eight of nine tournaments this season, fired a par-70, one off her season-best round. Moreno birdied the 1st and 3rd holes, bogeyed the 4th hole and shot par the rest of the round. She is tied for seventh.
Senior Catalina Marin, who tied for sixth at last year's NCAA Central Regional, posted a 5-over 76, tied for 44th. She was 1-under halfway through the round before falling back a bit. Senior Veronica finished the first round with a 7-over 78, tied for 72nd.
USC, which won the Central Regional last year at Texas A&M, is one of eight ranked teams vying to move on to the NCAA Championships. Troy has qualified for the NCAA Championships finals for 10 straight years under head coach Andrea Gaston.
Eight teams plus two individuals will advance from each 21-team regional to the NCAA Championships final at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 22-25, hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
Regional action continues Friday and Saturday.
