For the second consecutive season, the No. 6 USC women's golf team won the NCAA Championships Central Regional, advancing to the NCAA final for the 11th consecutive year on Saturday (May 12) at the University of Michigan G.C. in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Trojans led virtually wire to wire to secure their second title of the season, clinching the regional win with a final round 298. USC finished with a combined 869 (283-288-298, +17), 11 strokes ahead of second-place Georgia (880). USC's 869 set a women's 54-hole tournament course record by 12 strokes.
The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships from each of three regionals. The remaining teams that advanced out of the Central Regional were third-place TCU (883), fourth-place Indiana (884), fifth-place Arizona (885), sixth-place Vanderbilt (886), seventh-place Tennessee (893) and eighth-place Michigan State (901).
Junior Paola Moreno, who flirted with the individual lead throughout the three-day event, placed second at 1-under 212 (70-66-76), the fourth time this season she was USC's highest finisher as well as her fifth top 10 finish of the 2007 campaign. A day after a personal best 66, Moreno wasn't quite as sharp in her final round, but still finished only four strokes back of individual title winner Jacqui Concolino of Venderbilt, who won with a 5-under 208,
Freshman Belen Mozo turned in her highest finish as a Trojan, tying for third at a par 213 (68-74-71). She got off to a rocky start with a double bogey on the 3rd hole, but then birdied the 8th through 11th holes as well as the 13th. She fell back a bit with three more bogeys, but her final round 71 was still her second best round of the season.
Junior Dewi Claire Schreefel took 14th at 8-over 221 (69-76-76). She has finished in the top 15 in all five of her NCAA Championships regional or final appearances.
Senior Catalina Marin tied for 33rd at 14-over 227 (76-76-75) while fellow senior Veronica Felibert finished 62nd at 20-over 233 (78-72-83).
Eight teams plus two individuals will advance from each 21-team regional to the NCAA Championships final at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 22-25, hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
USC was second at the NCAA Championships in 2006 and won its only NCAA title in 2003.
