The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named its 2007 Pocock All-America teams this week with three Trojans receiving honors. The awards recognize the outstanding performances by rowers and coxswains from each of the Division I regions, organized into first and second-team selections. Junior Ligita Kaviere and freshman Gabriela Varekova were each named to the first team and redshirt junior Lauren Cowan was selected as the second team coxswain.
All three Trojan All-Americans were part of a Varsity Eight boat that was ranked No. 1 in the country for a school record six weeks. Their boat went undefeated and almost unchallenged for nearly the entire 2007 regular season.
Kaviere was also a CRCA Pocock All-America First Team selection in 2006 and concluded her second consecutive campaign for the honor by being named to the All-Pac-10 Conference Team for the second time as well as a third straight selection to the CRCA All-West Region Team. She is the first Trojan to receive first-team All-American honors twice. Ivelina Boteva and Andrea Korom each received first and second-team honors in consecutive years.
Freshman stroke Gabriela Varekova receives her first selection to the All-America First Team and is the first Trojan freshman to ever receive such high honors. The only other Trojan freshman to be selected to the All-America team was Simone Manhold in 2004 to the second team. Varekova's selection completes an impressive list of post-season honors for the true freshman having been named to the CRCA All-West Region First Team and the All-Pac-10 Conference Team in addition to being named the Pac-10's freshman of the year.
Redshirt junior Lauren Cowan received coxswain honors for the 2007 CRCA Pocock All-America Second Team, adding to her post-season distinction as the CRCA All-West Region First Team coxswain. Boats coxed by Cowan went undefeated nearly the entire season, falling only in the final race of the year by the slimmest of margins. This is Cowans' first such honor and is also the first such honor for a USC coxswain.
The three selections mark the first time that USC has had three All-Americans in a single season. The Trojans had two rowers on each of the 2002, 2004 and 2006 All-American teams. Also with the three selections, USC runs its total of All-American rowers to eight in the past seven seasons.
