Jared Dayton had 18 kills and Brian Muesenfechter added 12 kills to help the unranked Lewis men's volleyball team score an upset sweep over No. 8 USC, 30-24, 30-27, 30-22, in a non-conference match on Wednesday (March 5) at USC's Galen Center.
Lewis improved to 12-6 overall, while the Trojans fell to 9-10.
The Flyers hit .422 and had 10.5 blocks in the match, while USC hit just .224 with 4.5 blocks.
Dayton hit .500, while Muesenfechter had a match-high 7 digs. Teammate Drew Pickering added 9 kills and Billy Sahagian had 8 kills while hitting .583.
For USC, Juan Figueroa had 17 kills and 6 digs and Murphy Troy added 10 kills.
Lewis broke ahead early in the first game, 6-4, and held a lead until USC caught up at 21-21, but the Flyers-who hit .514 in the game-regained control by scoring the next 2 points and 5 of the following 6 points. The second game was knotted at 27-27 before a Muesenfechter kill and a pair of Trojan hitting errors closed it out. Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the third game and never surrendered the lead while hitting .419 and getting 6.5 blocks and 14 digs in that game.
USC next returns to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action when it visits No. 3 Cal State Northridge this Friday (March 7) at 7 p.m.
