
USC Men's Volleyball Defeats Long Beach State

Murphy Troy had 20 kills, 12 digs and 8 blocks to lead the No. 4-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 31-33, 30-17, 30-19, 30-25 victory over No. 6 Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Thursday (March 26) at USC's Galen Center.

In suffering their fifth straight loss to the Trojans, the 49ers fell to 10-11 overall and 7-9 in the MPSF.
Tony Ciarelli added 10 kills, 7 blocks and 5 digs for USC, while Steven Shandrick came off the bench and recorded 11 blocks and 8 kills as he hit .533. Also for USC, Tri Bourne had 9 kills, 9 digs and 6 blocks, Hunter Current had 8 kills, 5 blocks, 5 digs and 4 aces and Austin Zahn had 5 blocks before giving way to Shandrick when he suffered a mild ankle sprain late in the first set.
For LBSU, Dean Bittner had 12 kills and 6 digs, Dustin Watten had 15 digs, Srdjan Nadazdin had 9 kills and 5 blocks, Josh Riley also had 9 kills and Jim Baughman had 7 kills and 5 blocks.
USC hit .240 while limiting the 49ers to .066 and the Trojans had a decided edge in blocks, 26 to 14.
Long Beach State came all the way back from a 10-2 deficit in the first set, catching USC at 26-26 and then held off 3 set points before scoring the final 3 points. But USC came back with a fury in the second set, as the Trojans used some wicked serving by Current to go on a 7-point run to forge a 14-7 lead that it built upon. The Trojans got out to an 11-4 lead in the third set and were never threatened. In the final set, USC used an 11-2 run to open up a 15-11 margin and held on for the win.
USC next hosts No. 9 UC San Diego on Saturday (March 28) in an MPSF match at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
