Will Ehrman had 18 kills and Calvin Ross made 12 blocks to help the No. 10-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team upset No. 5 USC, 26-30, 30-25, 30-28, 30-26, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in San Diego on Friday (March 6).
UCSD improved to 8-9 overall and 4-8 in the MPSF, while the Trojans fell to 12-5 overall and 9-4 in the MPSF. It was just USC's sixth loss in 37 meetings with the Tritons.
UCSD outhit (.306 to .228) and outblocked (18 to 14) the Trojans.
Jason Spangler added 13 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks for the Tritons, while Phil Bannon had 8 blocks and 3 aces with his 46 assists, Gerald Houseman had 11 kills and 4 blocks and Eric Lesserman had 8 digs.
For USC, Tony Ciarelli had 14 kills while hitting .458 and also recorded 5 digs and 3 blocks, while Hunter Current had 10 kills (hitting .643) and 9 blocks, Murphy Troy added 10 kills and Riley McKibbin had 11 digs and 7 blocks along with 48 assists.
USC overcame a 14-10 deficit in the first set and eventually built a 20-18 lead that it held. The Trojans never led in the second set as UCSD hit .357. USC couldn't hold a 27-25 lead in the third set despite hitting .429 (the Tritons hit .455). USC fell behind early in the final set, 6-4, and could never catch up as UCSD hit .389.
USC next returns home to host non-conference opponent New Jersey Institute of Technology on March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center.
