USC sophomore outside hitter Murphy Troy was named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association National Division I/II Player of the Week for his performance in USC's victories over UC Irvine and Pepperdine in last week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
It's the second time this season that Troy has been named AVCA national player of the week, as he was also honored on Feb. 9 following USC's wins over BYU.
Troy led USC with 19 kills while hitting .600 and getting 3 aces in a 3-0 win over top-ranked UC Irvine on the Anteaters' home court in the MPSF tourney semifinals. The win snapped a 10-match Trojan losing streak to the Anteaters that stretched to 2004. It was the Trojans' first win at Irvine since 2000, ending an 11-match losing string there. It propelled the Trojans into the MPSF championship match for the first time since 1999.
In the final against No. 2-ranked Pepperdine, Troy had 23 kills and 5 digs as the Trojans pulled out a dramatic 3-2 victory. That earned USC its first trip to the NCAA Championships since 1991.
