All-American Murphy Troy had a match-high 17 kills, while Tony Ciarelli added 12 kills and Tri Bourne had 11 kills to lead the No. 1-ranked USC men's volleyball team to 30-24, 30-24, 30-21 sweep over No. 12 UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 22) at USC's Galen Center.
The Trojans improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF, their best overall and league starts since posting similar records in 2000. The Tritons fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF.
Troy hit .344 and had 4 digs and 3 blocks, Ciarelli added 6 digs and Bourne hit .368 with 8 digs and 2 aces. Andrew Pizula had a match-best 10 digs.
For UCSD, Frank Fritsch had 16 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks and Calvin Ross had 4 blocks.
USC hit .349 in the match to UCSD's .190 and the Trojans had more digs (40 to 28) and aces (5 to 1), but the Tritons had more blocks (7.5 to 6).
USC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and UCSD was never able to catch up as the Trojans hit .333 to the Tritons' .195 in the set. In the second set, USC overcame a 14-11 deficit by scoring 5 consecutive points and then finished out the set by scoring 7 of the last 9 points. The Trojans got out to a quick 3-0 edge in the final set and ended the match on a Troy ace by tallying 7 of the last 8 points while hitting .417.
Next up for USC is an MPSF road match at No. 7 Pepperdine on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
