Tony Ciarelli had 14 kills and 9 digs and Murphy Troy added 11 kills to help the No. 1-ranked USC men's volleyball team open up its 2010 season with a 30-28, 30-24, 30-24 win over No. 5 Penn State in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu, Hi.
Also for the Trojans, Tri Bourne recorded 9 kills while hitting .471 and Austin Zahn had 7 kills (hitting .667) and 4 blocks. Andrew Pizula, in his first USC appearance, had a match-best 12 digs as the libero.
USC outhit (.393 to .208) and outblocked (8.5 to 4) the Nittany Lions.
For Penn State, Joe Sunder had 14 kills and Max Lipsitz had 11 kills.
The Trojans continue play in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational, next facing No. 10 Ohio State (0-1) on Friday (Jan. 8) at 4 p.m. HT and then finishing with host No. 12 Hawaii (1-0) on Saturday (Jan. 9) at 7 p.m. HT. The Buckeyes were swept by Hawaii on Thursday.
