SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 16 USC women's soccer team came up empty on its trip to San Diego, taking the Trojans' second 1-0 loss of the season to the Toreros. A first-half goal by USD would stand up through the full 90, leaving USC with its first loss in 10 games. USC is now 7-2-2 overall, and USD goes to 6-4-2.
The Women of Troy lost to San Diego 1-0 in their season opener, but USC had a built a nine-game unbeaten streak and was on a six-game win streak entering tonight's rematch with the Toreros. The referee's whistle was not on USC's side in the game, as San Diego was not called for a foul until the 70th minute of the match. By that time, the Toreros were already up 1-0, thanks to a first-half score that ricocheted off the post too sharply for USC goalkeeper Shelby Church to handle. It was in the 34th minute of play that the Toreros got on the board. Taylor Housley got off a shot that rattled the side post. The ball knocked hard back at Church, who got her hand on it but couldn't haul in the stop as the ball got to the back of the net.
Down 1-0, USC improved on its possession in the second half. Samantha Johnson was busy up front for the Trojan offense, and Morgan Morrow got a look on goal, but the USD defense managed to keep the Trojans out of the net. USC would force six saves out of USD keeper Courtney Parsons in the match, outshooting the Toreros 10-8 overall. The foul count wound up 9-4 against the Trojans.
Now 7-2-2 overall, the Women of Troy turn to open up Pac-10 play next week. USC will host top-ranked Stanford in a 7 p.m. match at the L.A. Coliseum on Friday (Oct. 8). Admission is free to that game, as well as USC's Sunday matchup with Cal at 1 p.m. at McAlister Field.
