CORVALLIS, ORE. - The No. 19 USC women's soccer team had a slow start, but it was a late finish by host Oregon State that handed the Trojans a 1-0 loss in Pac-10 play on Friday night in Corvallis, Ore. Locked in scoreless play through 82 minutes, the Beavers followed up a USC corner kick with a goal at the other end to go up 1-0 and then hold on to make it stand up for the win. USC goes to 8-4-2 overall and 1-2 in Pac-10 play with the road loss, while Oregon State improves to 10-1-1, 2-0.
The Women of Troy didn't tally a single shot in the first half of play, despite earning a set of five corner kicks during the half. USC picked it up in the second half and rattled off 10 shots, but it was the Beavers that would get to the back of the net in the half. The Trojans earned a late corner kick, but Carly Butcher's ensuing shot would go high. Oregon State took the ball the other direction later, and finished off a cross from the right for a goal from Chelsea Buckland to take the Beavers ahead 1-0 in the 83rd minute of play. USC couldn't get the equalizer in the remaining time, despite a late attack from Elizabeth Eddy.
USC will now look to make it a road split when the Trojans head over to Eugene to face Oregon in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday (Oct. 17).
