Doubles Semis Ahead For Johnson And Sarmiento

IRVINE, CALIF. - The USC men's tennis team has a trio of Trojans bound for quarterfinal play along with semifinal representation in doubles at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships after a big day in Irvine today. USC's Steve Johnson and Ray Sarmiento powered through more doubles competition and secured a place in tomorrow's semifinals, while Sarmiento and teammates Daniel Nguyen and Jaak Poldma all have quarterfinal singles action coming up tomorrow.
Nguyen, Poldma and Sarmiento each generated straight-set singles wins during the Round of 16, while also pulling double duty on the doubles courts. Poldma and teammate Peter Lucassen were edged out in the Round of 16 in the morning to fall short of the quarters. Nguyen and partner JT Sundling jumped in the quarterfinals and fell in the quarterfinals, putting Johnson and Sarmiento on the stage as the Trojans' semifinal representatives. Johnson/Sarmiento punched in a dominant Round of 16 effort and backed that up with another big win in the quarterfinals. The No. 2-seeded Trojans will face No. 9 seed Gould/Tearney of host UC Irvine tomorrow morning in the semifinals.
