
No. 6 USC Beats Arizona State On Senior Night

LOS ANGELES - Freshman outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana (Hermosa Beach/Mira Costa HS) registered a career-high 23 kills and 27.0 points Saturday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-1 (25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 25-17), in Pac-10 Conference action at the Galen Center. Fonoimoana hit .442 (23-4-43) with two aces, five digs, three blocks and one assist in the match.
USC improved to 22-4 and 11-4 in the conference as the Women of Troy sit in third place in the Pac-10. The Trojans posted 11 blocks in the match and had six service aces on the evening.
Alex Jupiter added 18 kills with 12 digs and four blocks while hitting .424 (18-4-33) for the Trojans. Senior middle blocker Zoe Garrett had five kills and no errors with four blocks on Senior Night. Junior setter Kendall Bateman had 49 assists and 13 digs with two kills.
Sarah Reaves led Arizona State (11-16, 5-9) with 14 kills and 11 digs. Erica Wilson had eight kills in a .353 night while setter Cat Highmark had 34 assists with 12 assists and two kills.
The Women of Troy opened the first set with a scorching .679 hitting clip with 19 kills and no errors as Fonoimoana was a perfect 7-for-7. USC started with a 10-3 run to open the match. Lauren Williams figured for a few kills as the USC stayed ahead at 16-9. Katie Fuller closed out the strong set for the Trojans with a kill. Another strong start aided the Women of Troy in the second set with a 12-4 advantage. Jupiter made it an 11-3 run in the middle of the set for the 16-6 score. Fonoimoana added three kills later and Jupiter's blast made it a 2-0 lead for the home team.
Arizona State answered USC in the third set, leading out to an 8-5 lead. The Trojans tied it up at 13-13 on back-to-back service aces from freshman libero Natalie Hagglund. Alexis Olgard helped USC take a 21-18 lead, but hitting errors plagued the Trojans as ASU finished with a 7-2 flurry to take the third set. Despite the loss, USC reverted to its form in the fourth set as a 10-4 lead helped cement the victory. USC led, 23-12, late in the set as ASU attempted to climb back before Jupiter added two more kills to her total for the conference win.
USC continues Pac-10 Conference play on the road next weekend at Oregon State on Friday (Nov. 19) and Oregon on Saturday (Nov. 20).
Notes: Tonight was the final regular season home match for three USC seniors: Geena Urango, Zoe Garrett and Kimmee Roleder...USC finishes the regular season with a 12-1 record at the Galen Center with the only loss coming on Oct. 8 against then-No. 1 Stanford...USC is 64-8 all-time at the Galen Center.
