The USC men's golf team, coming off of a pair of top 5 finishes, looks to finish the 2010 fall schedule on a high note when it plays at the sixth annual Gifford Collegiate Championship at the CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif., Monday through Wednesday (Nov. 8-10).
Competing in the 12-team tournament on the par 72, 71,69-yard course are host UCLA, USC, Arizona, Augusta State, Lamar, Long Beach State, Northwestern, Oregon, Oklahoma, San Diego, Stanford and Washington. Unlike most collegiate events in which the top four scores of the five golfers playing count per round, the Gifford Collegiate features a six play-five count format over the 54-hole event.
Stanford won the event last year (and in 2006) while USC won it in 2008. UCLA won it in 2005 and 2007. Results will be available at www.golfstat.com.
The Trojans, under fifth-year head coach Chris Zambri and led by 2010 Freshman All-American T.J. Vogel and All-Pac-10 performer Steve Lim, finished fourth in their most recent event at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, where Vogel and Lim both finished in the top 10. Prior to that, USC finished fifth at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational.
Vogel has a pair of top 5 finishes this season, tying for fourth at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at 5-over 215 (68-74-73) and taking second at the U.S. Collegiate Championships at 7-under 209 (74-69-66). He now has 10 career rounds in the 60s.
Troy's active leader in rounds in the 60s is Lim with 14. He's seen action in only two events this fall, but one came at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, where he finished sixth at 3-under 213 (69-69-75).
Sophomore Martin Trainer has a pair of top 30 finishes this season, tying for eighth at the Bill Cullum Invitational at even 216 (71-71-74) and tying for 26th at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at 14-over 224 (74-78-72).
Freshman Jeffrey Kang notched a career-best tie for fourth at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at 5-over 215 (73-71-71), his best effort in three events this year. He also tied for 33rd at the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
Senior Bo DeHuff tied for eighth at the Bill Cullum Invitational at even 216 (70-73-73). Sophomore Stewart Hagestad registered a season-beset 35th at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, sophomore Sam Smith has seen action in two events, and freshman Ramsey Sahyoun has played once.
