Junior Steve Lim tied for fifth and sophomore Martin Trainer tied for 10th to lead the USC men's golf team in the first round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., on Monday (Nov. 8).
In an event in which six golfers play and the top five scores count (compared to the usual five-count-four), the Trojans finished sixth at 23-over 378, 11 shots back of first-place UCLA (367) in the 12-team event. Stanford was second (368) and was followed by Washington (370), Northwestern (371), Oregon (375) and USC.
Lim finished at 1-over 72. He opened with a 1-under front 9 before bogeying four of the next six holes to fall to 3-over. But he responded with birdies on two of the final three holes to move back up the leader board.
Trainer had a similar day, birdying the fifth hole before four bogeys sent him to 3-over. He sunk a birdie putt on 18 to get to 2-over for the round.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel tied for 25th at 4-over 75 on a day wild day that featured four birdies, four bogeys and two doubles.
Senior Bo DeHuff and freshmen Jeffrey Kang and Ramsey Sahyoun tied for 59th at 8-over 79.
