Murphy Troy had 18 kills while hitting .485 to lead the No. 6-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 30-26, 30-21, 30-23 sweep over No. 7 UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (April 3) at USC's Galen Center.
USC improved to 13-9 overall and 10-8 in the MPSF, while UCLA dropped to 14-11 overall and 9-9 in the MPSF. It was USC's fifth win in its last 6 meetings against the Bruins and it upped third-year Trojan head coach Bill Ferguson's record to 6-2 over legendary Bruin head coach Al Scates.
The victory also gave USC 2.5 more points in the Crosstown Gauntlet competition, which goes to the school with the most successful athletic year against the other. Currently, USC holds a 42.5-35 lead over UCLA.
Tony Ciarelli added 13 kills and 7 digs for USC, while Tri Bourne had 7 kills (hitting. 412), Hunter Current and Austin Zahn each hit .625 with 6 kills, Riley McKibbin had 6 digs and 43 assists and Maddison McKibbin had 9 digs.
For UCLA, Jack Polales had 13 kills (hitting .344) and 7 digs, Thomas Amberg had 8 kills while hitting .545, Garrett Muagututia had 7 kills and 7 digs, Ryal Jagd had 6 kills, Tom Hastings had 9 digs and Kevin Ker had 7 digs and 36 assists.
USC hit a season-high .423, while UCLA managed to hit just .196. The Trojans had 6.5 blocks to UCLA's 4.0 and they served 4 aces.
USC got off to quick leads in each set against the Bruins. The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and built it to 14-7 before UCLA pulled within 24-21, but USC held on while hitting .487 to the Bruins' .385. The Trojans used a 6-0 run to forge a 14-5 margin in the second set and were never threatened while hitting .464 (UCLA hit just .079). It was more of the same in the third set, as USC's 6-2 lead increased to 16-8 after a 5-point run behind a .324 hitting mark to UCLA's .114.
It was Senior Night at USC. Current, along with fellow seniors Jon Hackett and Tyler Stevens, played their final regular-season home match as Trojans.
USC concludes its regular season with 4 consecutive road matches, starting with visits to Pacific on April 9 and then No. 1 Stanford on April 10.
