DES MOINES, IOWA - USC freshman Lauren Chambers in the hammer throw and incoming freshman Josh Mance in the 400m race qualified for the U.S. Junior Team at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 24-26 in Des Moines, Iowa. The top two finishers in each event, as long as they meet the qualifying standard, earn a spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada from July 19-25.
Chambers placed second in the hammer throw and will represent the U.S. at the World Juniors held in Canada this summer. Her best throw on the day was 188-9 (57.54m), with all six attempts being fair and all landing within a 2.5 meter window. Chambers set the U.S. Junior record in the hammer throw in April with a throw of 206-5 (62.93m). She also placed second in the hammer throw at the Pac-10 Championships this season with a mark of 195-2 (59.49m).
Incoming freshman Josh Mance also qualified for the U.S. Junior Team by placing second in the 400m race with a time of 46.20, behind only Houston freshman Errol Nolan who reached the NCAA semifinals in the event and had a 45.68 winning time here at the U.S. Juniors. Mance won the 2010 California state 400m title with the nation's high school leading 400m time of 45.90.
Incoming freshman Jenna Puterbaugh ran in both the 100m and 200m dashes, but did not advance to the finals. She placed 15th in the girls 100m dash and 14th in the 200m race. She had a strong senior year in which she had a best 100m time of 11.68 and a best 200m time of 23.67.
U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
At the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships also held in Des Moines, Iowa, former Trojans Jesse Williams and Allyson Felix won U.S. titles while several others reached finals at the championships. Every four years there is no U.S. team to qualify for as there are no World Track and Field Championships or Olympics and 2010 is that year.
Williams won the men's high jump title by clearing 7-5.00 (2.26m), winning on misses over Tora Harris who also cleared 7-5.00. Williams is USC's record-holder in the event with a collegiate best clearance of 7-7.25 (2.32m)
The two-time Olympic silver medalist at 200m Felix took home her first U.S. title in the 100m dash with a winning time of 11.27 into a -2.5 wind. Among the 2010 Trojans competing, redshirt senior Brysun Stately finished tied for 13th in the women's pole vault by clearing 13-7.25 (4.15m). Earlier this year, the Trojans' redshirt senior broke her school record in the pole vault by clearing 14-0.00 (4.27m).
Senior Ahmad Rashad advanced to the semifinals in the men's 100m dash, but his time of 10.55 into a -3.1 wind was not good enough to qualify him for the finals. Rashad cruised in the first round with a time of 10.41. During his senior season in 2010, Rashad became the first Pac-10 male sprinter to win the 100m and 200m conference titles three times.
Senior Shalina Clarke reached the semifinals at the U.S. Championships in the women's 100m HH, placing 15th with a time of 13.77 (-2.9w). She qualified for the semifinals with a time of 13.55 (-2.2w) in the first round. Clarke finished her USC career this season with a best time of 13.09 which ranks third all-time by a Trojan female.
Redshirt sophomore Cooper Thompson placed 16th in the men's javelin with a throw of 213-11 (65.20m). He stormed onto the scene this season with a throw of 253-3 (77.19m) which ranks second all-time at USC to former Trojan Corey White (272-2). White placed 10th at the U.S. Championships with a best throw of 229-11 (70.09m).
Redshirt senior Aaron Dan coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships, placed 12th in the discus with a best throw of 182-1 (55.50m). Dan finished his USC career seventh on the Trojans' all-time list with a best mark of 198-5 (60.48m).
Among the other former Trojans to compete were Ginnie (Powell) Crawford who reached the finals in the women's 100m HH and placed fourth with a time of 12.90 into a -2.1 wind. She also reached the finals of the 100m dash, finishing eighth with a time of 11.54 into a -2.5 wind. She had a best time of 11.39 in the first round of the 100m dash.
Duane Solomon placed second in the men's 800m race with a time of 1:47.16, behind the winner Nick Symmonds, who won his third consecutive U.S. title in the event. Solomon had the top qualifying time in the semifinals with a personal best of 1:45.23.

Noah Bryant placed seventh in the men's shot put competition with a best mark of 66-3.75 (20.21m). Bryant is the USC record-holder in the shot put with a collegiate best of 67-5.50 (20.56m).
