
Trojans Competing At Caribbean And European Championships

Brandon Estrada placed second in the pole vault in Puerto Rico, while Zsofia Erdelyi took 13th place in the 10000m race in Barcelona to lead several Trojans competing at the 21st Central America and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and the 20th European Athletic Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Estrada, who finished his collegiate eligibility this season, competed for Puerto Rico and placed second in the pole vault on July 27 with a clearance of 17-8.50 (5.40m). He cleared 5.10m, 5.20m, 5.30m and 5.40m on his first attempt, but missed once at 5.35m and all three times at 5.50m. The winner Giovanni Lanaro of Mexico cleared 18-4.50 (5.60m).
Former Trojan Carol Rodriguez competed for Puerto Rico in the 100m and 200m dashes. She placed second in the 200m race with a time of 23.37 into a -0.9 wind on July 27, while placing fourth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.56 on July 25.
Also competing in a final on July 27 was Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez who placed fifth in the 400m intermediate hurdles with a time of 50.08. Sanchez was competing for his native Dominican Republic and was five years older than anyone who reached the finals.
At the European Championships in Barcelona, soon to be senior Zsofia Erdelyi of Hungary ran in the women's 10000m race today (July 28) and placed 13th with a time of 34.57.77. Erdelyi was the third-youngest competitor in the field.
Former Trojan Eva Orban of Hungary competed in the women's hammer throw competition today and advanced to the finals to be held on July 30 with a throw of 225-0 ((68.59m).
