IRVINE, CALIF. - The No. 4 USC men's water polo team pounded out 30 goals in their second game of the season as the Trojans topped Whittier 30-2 today at the UCI Invitational in Irvine, Calif. A whopping 15 Trojans scored in the game, including five players tallying hat tricks in the win. USC now holds a 2-0 record as the Trojans start their 2010 campaign.
Freshmen Jeremy Davie, Max Hurst-Mendoza and Connor Virjee all notched their first goals as Trojans in the win, and redshirt sophomore goalie Jimmy Friedrich saw his first time in the cage after being sidelined by injuries. Friedrich picked up for Joel Dennerley in the second half of play and grabbed six saves while allowing just a single goal. Dennerley's time in the cage saw similar results, as the junior and his defense shut out Whittier in the first frame and allowed just one goal in the second while the Trojans built up a 17-1 halftime lead.
After another shutout period in the fourth and another hot-shooting half of play by the Trojans, USC had 15 different players in the scoring column. Leading the way were five Trojans with three goals: returner Zayne Belal and four newcomers, Jeremy Davie, Nicola Vavic, Mace Rapsey and Max Hurst-Mendoza.
USC will now return to Los Angeles to set up for its home opener. The Trojans host Long Beach State at 3 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 11) in an official game that will be followed by USC's Alumni Game at 5 p.m.
