Morozov Wins Twice To Open SMU Swim Classic

Freshman Vladimir Morozov won races in the 50y free and the 100y back to lead the No. 7 USC men's swimming and diving team to second place after the first night of the SMU Swim Classic in Dallas on Friday (Jan. 14).
No. 13 Michigan led the six-team event with 164 points midway through the two-day event with the Trojans in second (148). No. 9 North Carolina was third (144) with No. 5 Florida fourth (138), No. 21 Purdue fifth (123) and SMU sixth (120).
In the uniquely scored event, each team places one swimmer in a championship final and one in a `B' final (plus one diving event per night). Each team has a maximum of eight swimmers and one diver.
Morozov won the 50y free in 19.95, more than a half second ahead of Michigan's Miguel Ortiz (20.51). Morozov later won the 100y back in 48.74 while sophomore Alex Lendrum won the B heat in 49.87.
USC's 400y medley relay of Lendrum, senior Dillon Connolly, sophomore Clement Lefert and Morozov was third (3:18.09) while its 800y free relay of Lefert, junior Patrick White, freshman Jack Wagner and freshman Dimitri Colupaev was also third (6:36.48).
Lendrm was fifth in the 400y IM A final (4:03.96), Lefert was fourth in the 200y free (1:39.07), senior Steve Starks was second on 1-meter springboard (324.07, 1.5 out of first), White was third in the 100y fly (48.81) and Connolly was third in the 100y breast (55.86).
The meet concludes Saturday (Jan. 15), beginning at 5:30 p.m. CST.
