Daniel Nguyen Pushes To ITA Singles Round of 16

TULSA, OKLA. -- USC senior Daniel Nguyen punched in a pair of wins in today's main draw singles action at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Nguyen's comeback win in the Round of 32 today solidified a Round of 16 spot for Nguyen, while USC sophomore Ray Sarmiento forges his way through the consolation singles bracket after a tough first-round loss today.
Sarmiento was up against the tournament's No. 3 seed in his opening match today, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Duke's Henrique Cunha to move into the consolation bracket. There, Sarmiento took down Georgia Tech's Juan Spir to get back on a winning track.
Meanwhile, Nguyen pinned up a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over Louisiana State's Neal Skupski in his Round of 64 match to kick things off in Tulsa. He would go on to face Washington's Kyle McMorrow in the next round, where Nguyen bounced back from a first-set loss to roll to a strong three-set win in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. That advances Nguyen to the Round of 16 tomorrow, where he'll go up against a qualifier from Vanderbilt, Charlie Jones.
Earlier this week in ITA action, USC freshman Yannick Hanfmann got out of the gates with another win, making it a 4-0 start to his singles career at USC. His first match of ITA All-American qualifying saw Hanfmann roll over Florida State's Cristian Gonzalez-Mendez with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on Monday (Oct. 3). That moved him into the second round, where he faced No. 7 seeded Bob van Overbeek of Florida. Hanfmann grabbed the first set, but was edged out in the second and fell in three to van Overbeek with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 decision that wrapped up his push for a spot in the main draw.
