Trojans Fall In National Indoor Main Draw

USC men's tennis had its two representatives at the ITA National Indoor Championships take on tough first-round foes and fall on the first day of action at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Senior Daniel Nguyen had his hands full with the top seed in the tourney, while sophomore Ray Sarmiento had the No. 6 seed to handle in today's Round of 32.
Up against top-seeded newcomer to the scene Mitchell Frank of Virginia, #16 Daniel Nguyen fell 6-2, 6-2 to the recently crowned ITA All-American champ in a rematch of the pair's face-off at the All-American semifinals a month ago. Nguyen's Trojan teammate Ray Sarmiento, meanwhile, was up against No. 6 seeded and #5 ranked Chase Buchanan of Ohio State for another tough showdown. Buchanan managed a 6-4, 6-4 win over USC's #15 ranked sophomore, sending both Sarmiento and Nguyen into the consolation rounds of singles in New York.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, four Trojans took part in the first day of action at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships in Westwood. Top-seeded freshman Yannick Hanfmann snagged a pair of wins to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals, while also lined up for doubles action tomorrow with teammate Emiilo Gomez. Gomez picked up a Round of 32 win to start the day of singles, but fell in his afternoon match in a three-setter to Bruin Alex Brigham to miss a spot in the quarters. Freshmen Eric Johnson and Jonny Wang both lost in their Round of 32 singles matches today in the main draw, while sophomore Corey Smith fell in qualifying matches. Johnson and Wang will team up tomorrow for Round of 16 doubles play.
