Junior Lisa McCloskey is tied for fifth and leads five Trojans in the top 14 as the No. 2 USC women's golf team finds itself in second-place - amidst a four-team battle for first - after the second round of the 2011 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Tuesday (Feb. 15) at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C.
USC, the event's defending champion, dropped out of first place late in the second round and are now at 17-over 585 (290-285), two back of first-place UCLA (583). Pepperdine is third (586) while Arizona State is fourth (592).
McCloskey, the tournament's reigning champ, remained in a tie for fifth after a 1-over second round left her at 3-over 145 (73-72) for the event. She was 3-over through 10 holes, but birdies on 14 and 16 helped her get to within a stroke of even for the day.
Junior Inah Park is tied for 10th at 5-over 147 (72-75). Park got off to a slow start, 4-over through seven holes. But she birdied four of the next seven holes to return to even, only to double bogey 15 and 18. Still, she is battling for her first top 10 finish this season and third in the top 25.
Senior Lizette Salas (71-77), junior Cyna Rodroguez (74-74) and freshman Sophia Popov (74-74) are all tied for 14th at 6-over 178. Rodriguez, like Park, got off to a slow start but finished the final 14 holes at 2-under for a solid round in wet conditions. Popov was steady, with just three bogeys and 15 pars.
The event concludes Wednesday. Check Golfstat.com for tee times.
