LOS ANGELES - The USC women's rowing team enjoyed a productive and successful start to the 2011 spring season with a scrimmage against San Diego State and San Diego on Saturday (March 5) at the Port of Los Angeles.
The crews competed in a series of 1500 meter pieces with the varsity eight's, varsity four and novice eight boats. The Trojans performed well winning all of their practice runs as they experimented with their line-ups in each of the boats. Coaches were pleased with the outcome and with certain alignments that may be used in the regular season.
"I was very happy with our performances today", said Head Coach Zenon Babraj. "It's always exciting to get the season going and we really enjoyed the competition with SDSU and San Diego. We are pleased with our progress and going forward in our training I think this is the strongest we have looked since 2007 when we had a chance at a national title."
The Women of Troy will continue their preparation this week with extensive ergometer testing before they head to Lake Natoma in Sacramento this Saturday to begin their training camp. Final boat assignments will be decided after course testing is completed later this month.
After racing was completed for the day, USC held a dedication ceremony for it's new boat "Fight On" outside the boathouse with the team and their families. The top-of-the-line Empacher eight will become the new race boat for the first varsity eight this season.
The team's first official race of the season will be April 2-3 at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay, California.
