BRYAN, TEXAS -- Junior Inah Park's 1-under 71 led No. 1 USC in a day of much improvement at the third round of the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Championships at Texas A&M's Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas on Friday (May 20).
After starting the day with a share of 15th, USC posted a 4-over 292 to finish the day tied for eighth place with No. 25 Florida when play was halted due to weather and darkness. The Trojans were paired with No. 11 Arkansas and No. 39 Minnesota in the third round.
"I was really happy with the way we fought our way back today after a couple tough rounds, " USC head coach Andrea Gaston said. "I thought we showed a lot of determination today and we put ourselves in a positive situation for the final round. I'm proud of our girls."
The Trojans, playing without top junior Lisa McCloskey (ranked No. 6 in the country), who is out with a rib injury, are riding a streak of four straight top four finishes at the NCAAs and have nine top 7 results since 1998. USC has also finished in the 3 of 12 straight events.
Park currently tied for 52nd, is 9-over for the tournament (76-78-71). She opened her round with a bogey on the first hole but quickly bounced back with two birdies for a 1-under front nine. If not for a double-bogey seven on the 10th hole Park could have posted a much lower score as she rattled off three more birdies on the back nine.
Senior Lizette Salas remained steady finishing the day at 6-over (75-73-74), good for a share of 32nd place. Salas suffered a double-bogey six on the sixth hole but rebounded with back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight.
Freshman Rachel Morris is tied for 56th at 10-over 226 (75-76-75) though 54 holes. She was able to string together four birdies on the day but stumbled with double-bogey's on holes eight and fifteen. Fellow freshman Sophia Popov (78-76-73) and sophomore Cyna Rodriguez (76-77-74) have a share of 60th at 11-over par.
Tee times for the final round will not be posted as part of the field will resume play of the suspended third round at 8:30 a.m.
