The Trojan men's volleyball team won 3 of its 5 matches in the 9-team pre-season USC Fall Tournament Oct. 19 and 20 in the Galen Center Pavilion.
On Oct. 19, USC opened with a 27-25, 25-23, 15-10 win over Cal Baptist, the newest member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Troy then fell to crosstown foe UCLA, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 in a match that was played in the Galen Center's main court following the Women of Troy victory over Utah.
On Oct. 20, the Trojans defeated Grand Canyon, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12, then lost to UC Irvine 22-25, 27-25, 25-18 in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship match won by the Anteaters, and then concluded tourney play with a 25-17, 16-25, 15-11 victory over Pacific.
The matches were best of 3 sets, with the first 2 sets played to 25 points and the third set to 15 points, unless the teams decided prior to a match to play longer.
Also in the tourney were MPSF opponents Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge and Stanford.
This was the first 2012-13 pre-season tourney for USC, which has advanced to the NCAA Final Four 3 times in the past 4 years. The Trojans next head to UCLA on Nov. 16 and 17 for the UCLA SAC Tournament, with UC Santa Barbara and Lewis also in the field.
