Young Trojans Strong In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - While Trojan veterans did All-American battle in Tulsa this week, a set of newer USC men's tennis representatives were on task at the San Diego State Fall Invitational. Sophomore Jonny Wang was the big winner on the weekend, running to win the singles championship and teaming up with fellow finalist Max de Vroome for a successful doubles effort to win the doubles title as well.
In the competitive Flight A singles draw, Wang and de Vroome each won their first three singles matches to propel themselves into an all-Trojan title match. There, freshman de Vroome put pressure on sophomore Wang by taking the first set, but Wang recovered and won the match and the championship with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 final.
Wang and de Vroome would also pair up in the doubles draw, and together they were a force to reckon with. Three doubles wins there - including a gutsy 9-8 (5) win in the second round -- launched the duo into the championship match. That's where the Trojans teamed up for another tight win over another Sacramento State pair, taking the title with a 9-7 final.
The invitational also featured a Flight B singles draw, where USC junior Corey Smith won two matches before a bye put him in the title match. There, Smith's San Diego State opponent would capture the win with a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
