Daniel Nguyen was the definition of a winner as a Trojan, helping USC win four straight NCAA Team championships. Now graduated and digging into his pro career, Nguyen has inked his first Futures title onto his resume with a powerful effort at the ITF Pro Circuit Futures tournament in Irvine, Calif. this week, topping off his performance with an upset of the top seed.
Nguyen made a statement in the quarterfinals in Irvine when he took down the tournament's No. 2 seed Austin Krajicek in a three-setter with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win that launched him into the semis. With that big win under his belt, Nguyen settled back in and continued his stretch of straight-set wins as he dispatched Chris Wettengel 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal and went on to take down top-seeded Alex Bogdanovic 7-5, 6-2 in the title match.
Nguyen's setup to the upset of Krajicek was a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over No. 5 seeded Dennis Novikov.
