Ray Sarmiento Slices Through To ITA Indoor Quarterfinals

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- USC senior Ray Sarmiento has served up two straight-set wins in singles action at the ITA National Indoor Championships to score a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinal round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
It's a repeat trip to the quarters for #8 Sarmiento, who is looking to break through to the semis for the first time when he goes up against No. 4 seed Austin Smith of Georgia tomorrow evening in New York. Sarmiento already blasted the nation's #3 player Peter Kobelt of Ohio State with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the first round before knocking out #1 Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee today in the Round of 16.
Teammate Yannick Hanfmann had a tough first-round draw as well, up against the tournament's No. 2 seed, Guillermo Alcorta of Oklahoma. Alcorta held strong against the USC junior for a 6-1, 6-4 victory that bumped #18 Hanfmann out of the main draw.
In doubles, USC's ITA Southwest Regional champs Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson had scored a bye in the first round, but were up against the No. 2 seeded pair in the draw for round two. Virginia Tech's Bjerrehus/Contini were ready for the Trojan pair, pulling off an 8-6 win that put an end to the Trojans' main draw doubles campaign.
