Vineta Moca and Krisztina Gyimes Named CRCA All-Americans

LOS ANGELES - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its 2013 Pocock All-America award winners on Monday (June 10) with USC junior stroke Vineta Moca (Tukuma Nov, Latvia) on the first team and sophomore starboard Krisztina Gyimes (Gyor, Hungary) on the second team among honorees.
Moca will receive the second All-America certificate of her career. She was a second-team All-American as a sophomore. It is Gyimes' first such honor. USC now has 12 first-team CRCA All-America selections and 13 second-team selections in its history. 22 Women of Troy have received All-America notice since head coach Zenon Babraj took the reigns of the program in 2003.
In order to be considered for All-America honors, a student-athlete must meet all eligibility requirements as set forth by her institution and have rowed in at least 75-percent of the season's races in the top varsity boat. Student-athletes are nominated by her own institution and are selected to first and second teams based on the following criteria: strength of finish of the school's varsity eight boat, coach's comments, and a 2K ergometer score.
Moca held the stroke seat in USC's varsity eight for the second consecutive year and helped the Trojans win all but two races, this season. Her stroke helped USC win the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic and propelled her eight to its second Pac-12 title in program history. She was also honored as a CRCA All-West Region selection and was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team for the first time in her career. Moca received her second CRCA National Scholar-Athlete Award and was chosen to the Pac-12 Academic first team for the second straight year. Moca is just the seventh Trojan to receive All-America honors twice. Fellow Latvian Liene Bertasjus is the only USC rower to earn All-America honors three times in her career.
Gyimes joined the Trojans in the early spring and quickly established herself as a valuable asset to the USC eight. She maintained her position in the seventh seat all season and helped the Trojans to key wins at the San Diego Crew Classic (Jessop-Whittier Cup) and at the Pac-12 Championships. In just her first season, Gyimes also received CRCA All-West Region distinction as was chosen to the All-Pac-12 team.
Ranked No. 1 for much of the season, the Women of Troy completed the 2013 campaign with a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA championships. The Trojans' varsity four came in second for silver medals in the NCAA's fours event while the second varsity eight enjoyed a program-record fourth-place finish in its event. USC claimed three trophies at the San Diego Crew Classic, won the Lake Natoma Invitational, defeated UCLA in its annual dual race, and came in second at the Pac-12 championships.
