Duane Solomon placed sixth in the men's 800m final, while Dalilah Muhammad and Felix Sanchez advanced to 400m IH finals today (Aug. 13) at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships held in Moscow, Russia.
Solomon, who won the USA 800m title in June, placed sixth in a tight 800m final today with a time of 1:44.42. Four of the five runners to defeat Solomon had season-best times, while he was .57 seconds slower than his semifinal time which topped all competitors. Solomon had the early lead and had a 400m split of 50.28.
Muhammad placed third overall and second in her semifinal heat of the women's 400m IH with a time of 54.08 today. She will compete in the 400m IH finals on Aug. 15.
Sanchez also advanced to Thursday's final in the men's 400m IH by taking second in his heat today with a time of 48.10. That time tied for the second-fastest qualifying time. Sanchez is the reigning Olympic champion in the 400m IH and is attempting to become the first male to win gold at three different World Championships, having won in 2001 and 2003.
Things did not go as well for the reigning World Championships' high jump champion Jesse Williams as he continues to come back from an injury. Williams cleared 7-3.25 (2.22m) to tie for 23rd in the men's high jump. He cleared 7-1.50 in his first attempt, then cleared 7-3.25 in his third attempt and missed in all three jumps at 7-5.
