Semifinal Spots Slated For USC Men At ITA Regionals

MALIBU, CALIF. -- USC men's tennis moves into position for another possible title sweep at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships with two Trojans in singles semifinals tomorrow and one USC duo in a doubles semifinal. A winning day for both Max de Vroome and Jonny Wang on the singles courts today has each Trojan lined up with a semifinal spot tomorrow -- at opposite ends of the draw. Wang will pull double duty again tomorrow, too, as he and partner Eric Johnson upset the top seeds in the doubles draw to advance to the semifinal round at Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
The No. 2 seed in the singles draw, senior Jonny Wang pinned up a pair of straight-set wins today. So, too, did No. 4 seeded junior Max de Vroome. Wang beat out Cal Poly's Benjamin Donovan 7-5, 6-4 in the Round of 16 before topping Pepperdine's own Stefan Menichella 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals. He'll square off against No. 7 seed Uros Petronijevic of San Diego in tomorrow's semifinal at 1 p.m. Junior de Vroome also seemed to be on cruise control today. He fought through to a 6-4, 7-6 win over San Diego State's Marko Goles Babic in the Round of 16 before stomping UCLA's #93 Dennis Mkrtchian 6-0, 6-2 in the quarters. De Vroome will face another Bruin tomorrow with his semifinal bout against Mackenzie McDonald.
The doubles game was also clicking for Wang today, alongside trusty senior teammate Eric Johnson. They paired up early and served up a smooth 8-4 upset of San Diego's top-seeded Foss/Vittek. The No. 8 seeded Trojans will take on UCLA's No. 3 seeded Di Giulio/Sell tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the doubles semis.
