October 03, 2014 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, OKLA. -- USC's trio of Trojans in Tulsa made it a victorious day on all fronts today, ringing up singles and doubles wins to advance at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. Yannick Hanfmann and Jonny Wang both delivered in the singles main draw to cruise on into tomorrow's Round of 16. In doubles, Hanfmann paired back up with Roberto Quiroz for another win there, as the Trojan tandem steps into the main draw quarterfinals. Quiroz also rang up a consolation singles victory today, making it a solid day for the Trojan cause in Tulsa, Okla.
In the Round of 32 singles today, both Hanfmann and Wang came out with a clear agenda. Straight-set victory was the name of the game, with #2 Yannick Hanfmann zipping through to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Texas' #31 Lloyd Glasspool to advance. So, too, did #47 Jonny Wang ring up a resounding win with a 6-3, 6-3 takedown of #43 Felipe Soares of Texas Tech. That plunged the two Trojan seniors into the Round of 16, where both will face top-20 opponents tomorrow in the fight for a quarterfinal post. Hanfmann will take on #18 Denis Nguyen of Harvard, while Wang lines up against #17 Nathan Pasha of Georgia.
In consolation singles play, USC's #33 Roberto Quiroz righted the ship with a nice three-set upset of Virginia Tech's #14 Amerigo Contini, posting a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory to stay alive in the consolation bracket. He'll face Clemson's Hunter Harrington tomorrow in the next round of consolation play.
Meanwhile, Quiroz and Hanfmann have another busy day on their hands as they continue their push through the doubles main draw. The #19 Trojan tandem rang up a nice upset last night in Tulsa, registering a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory over Indiana's #13 Bednarczyk/Monette. With confidence duly boosted, Hanfmann and Quiroz squared off against Florida State's #10 Lock/Nunez today in the Round of 16. After stumbling in the first set, Hanfmann/Quiroz blasted their way to a second-set victory to force the 10-point tiebreaker to decide the third. There, the Trojans silenced the Seminoles to tack up a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-0) comeback win that propels them into tomorrow's quarterfinals. There, Hanfmann/Quiroz will face #22 Austin/Johnson of Vanderbilt in the afternoon.
