Trojans In Position for ITA All-American Title Sweep
October 05, 2014 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, OKLA. -- Yannick Hanfmann's trip to Tulsa has been all about business. Hanfmann has put on a tennis clinic at the ITA Men's All-American Championships, speeding through five straight-set victories to reach the singles title match tomorrow at the Michael D. Cast Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Hanfmann put the finishing touches on today's semifinal rounds by following up his singles victory with a dominating doubles win alongside teammate Roberto Quiroz. Their win launches them into the championship match, also tomorrow in Tulsa.
Hanfmann is the first Trojan to reach the ITA All-American singles final since Roberto Farah did so in 2007. USC has been represented in the singles final at the tournament seven times prior to Hanfmann, with Scott Melville standing as the only Trojan to win it all back in 1987. The only other time USC has reached the doubles title match was back in 1985, when two Trojan teams faced off, with Luke Jensen and Jorge Lozano beating teammates Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat in the final.
Standing tall as the No. 2 seed and #2 ranked player in the nation, Hanfmann has muscled his way through five rounds of singles play while giving up no more than six total games in each match. Today's semifinal bout against Wake Forest's #20 Romain Bogaerts saw a similar performance, as Hanfmann punched his ticket to the title match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bogaerts. Hanfmann will now square off against Louisville's #110 Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, who has worked his way from the qualifying rounds and into the main draw with a string of upsets.
Following tomorrow's singles championship match, Hanfmann's next order of business will be the doubles championship match. He and fellow senior Roberto Quiroz have paired to great success in Tulsa as the nation's #19 ranked pair. The duo took out two top-20 opponents to start their run, and today were up against a #37 team from Texas A&M, Efferding/Szabo. The Trojans jumped out well ahead of the Aggies today in the semifinals and cruised right along to a 6-1, 6-4 win that puts them in the title match. There, Hanfmann/Quiroz will face the top seeded and top-ranked Tennessee pair of Libietis/Reese from the other side of the draw.
Quiroz also was in action today in singles play, set up for the consolation semifinals against Ohio State's Chris Diaz. The Buckeye was able to endure a three-setter against Quiroz, topping the Trojan with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision.
