Trojans Finish As Runners-Up At ITA All-American
October 06, 2014 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, OKLA. -- USC tennis' roll through Tulsa hit a snag today in the titles matches of the ITA Men's All-American Championships. The Trojans came up against some tough opponents in the singles and doubles championship matches to finish as runners-up in both realms.
Senior Yannick Hanfmann was lined up for both championship bouts, opening his day in the singles title match against Louisville's upset-minded #101 Sebastian Stiefelmeyer. Hanfmann is the first Trojan since 2007 to reach the singles final at the ITA All-American, where only one Trojan out of six has ever won the singles title -- Scott Melville, back in 1987. Hanfmann had been at full power through the first five rounds of this year's tournament. Weighing in as the #2 player in the nation, Hanfmann had taken out five previous opponents in dominating fashion with straight-set takedowns to punch his ticket to today's singles final. Robert Farah was the last Trojan to make it to the final, having finished as the 2007 runner-up. So, too, did Hanfmann's success story take a stumble in the final, as he came up against a tough Stiefelmeyer today. The Cardinal star, who had worked his way through qualifying and through the main draw, captured a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hanfmann to nab the title from the Trojan.
Hanfmann's busy day continued just a couple hours later, as he teamed up with doubles partner Roberto Quiroz for the doubles championship match in the afternoon. Hanfmann and Quiroz rank #19 in the nation in doubles, and were up against the top-ranked team in Tennessee's Libietis/Reese. The Vols proved their worth in registering a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hanfmann/Quiroz, who are the first Trojan team since 1985 to reach the ITA All-American doubles final. That one was an all-Trojan final, with Luke Jensen and Jorge Lozano defeating USC teammates Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat.
