Giuliana Olmos & Gabby Smith Impress At ITA/Oracle Masters

MALIBU, CALIF. — The first edition of the ITA/Oracle Masters saw the Women of Troy make a loud statement on day one of action at the event at Malibu Racquet Club today. Senior Giuliana Olmos gutted out a three-set upset of the No. 2 seed in singles before pairing up with sophomore teammate Gabby Smith for a decisive doubles win. Olmos advances to tomorrow's singles quarterfinals, while she and Smith are now lined up for a doubles semifinal bout.
Ranked #10 in the nation in singles — her first top-10 ranking of her career — Giuliana Olmos proved she belonged there with her performance in today's singles Round of 16. Olmos squared off against No. 2 seeded and #6 ranked Stephanie Wagner of Miami, fighting off match point to force a third set. Olmos dug in and was in control of the third, finishing off her comeback efforts with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 upset of Wagner to punch her ticket to tomorrow's quarterfinals. There, Olmos will come up against North Carolina's #9 Hayley Carter at 12:30 p.m.
Olmos pulled double duty on the day in teaming up with her trusty sophomore sidekick Gabby Smith for doubles play. The pair scored a spot at the prestigious event as a wildcard team, and promptly iced a spot in tomorrow's semifinals by taking down Texas A&M's Gavrilovska/Pierson with a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory today. That puts Olmos/Smith up against Vanderbilt's No. 2 seeded and #4 ranked Campbell/Colton tomorrow in an 8 p.m. semifinal.
