Trojans Fight On In ITA All-American Main Draw

TULSA, OKLA. - The USC men's tennis team has pushed one singles player and two doubles team through to the next round of main draw action in Tulsa after a busy opening day of main draw competition at the ITA All-American Championships today. Sophomore Logan Smith prevailed in singles while USC doubles tandems Nick Crystal/Lauren Verboven and Brandon Holt/Riley Smith snagged wins of their own to advance.
Ranked #48 in the land, sophomore Logan Smith nabbed a notable 7-6 (7), 6-2 upset of Duke's #14 Nicolas Alvarez today to move on to tomorrow's Round of 32. Fellow Trojans Nick Crystal and Brandon Holt both fell in three-set battles in the opening round. #27 Crystal dropped a three-setter to Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg, Freshman Holt was up against #36 Gergely Madarasz of Purdue and wound up with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 loss to end his debut in Tulsa.
As doubles play heated up, both Trojan duos found their groove. USC's #10-ranked Crystal and Verboven dug in for a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over LSU's #38 Butsch/Daigle, and then freshman combo pack Holt/Smith served up an upset of #16 Friedrich/O'Keefe of South Carolina with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 decision.
Tomorrow, Logan Smith undergoes singles Round of 32 action to start the day while USC's double duos Crystal/Verboven and Holt/R. Smith are also locked in for duty in the doubles draw.
