No. 8 UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC

Jacob Delson had 18 kills while hitting .500 and he added 7 digs and 4 blocks to lead the No. 8-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 sweep over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at Santa Barbara.
UCSB improved to 12-6 overall and 8-5 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 3-12 overall and 3-10 in the MPSF.
Christopher Orenic led USC with 7 kills off the bench (hitting .308), while Alex Slaught added 6 kills and 5 digs and Andy Benesh, Tommy Leonard and Jon Rivera each had 5 kills (with Benesh hitting .714). Brooks Varni had 11 digs.
Austin Kingi added 8 kills and 5 digs for the Gauchos, while Parker Boehle had 11 digs and Ryan Hardy had 4 blocks.
UCSB outhit the Trojans, .317 to .146, and also had more digs (32 to 28), blocks (8.0 to 5.0) and aces (4 to 1).
In the opening set, UCSB scored back-to-back points to open an 8-6 lead and then soon extended it to 11-7, and the Trojans couldn't catch up as the Gauchos hit .448. UCSB used a 3-0 run to go up 17-14 in the second set, all the margin it needed while hitting .423. The Gauchos broke a 15-15 tie in the third set with a 3-point run and USC couldn't close the gap.
USC next hosts crosstown rival No. 4 UCLA on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 8 p.m. in the Galen Center in an MPSF match that will have Crosstown Cup points on the line and will air live on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
