
USC Men's Volleyball Sweeps UC San Diego

Lucas Yoder had 11 kills while hitting .450 to lead the USC men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-13 sweep over unranked UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (April 2) in USC's Galen Center.
USC improved to 7-16 overall and 5-14 in the MPSF. UCSD fell to 5-21 on the season and remained winless in MPSF play at 0-20.
Andy Benesh had 7 kills (hitting .700) and 4 blocks for the Trojans, Alex Slaught also had 7 kills, Jon Rivera had 6 kills and 5 digs and Brooks Varni had 5 digs.
For UCSD, Tanner Syftestad had a match-best 13 kills (hitting .364) and Ian Colbert had 5 digs.
USC hit .414 in the match and served 9 aces, both season highs. The Trojans had 9.0 blocks, but missed 16 serves. UCSD hit just .078.
USC jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set and held that margin the rest of the set while hitting .360 to UCSD's .056 (but Troy had 8 serving errors). Troy scored the first 3 points of the second set and steadily pulled away while hitting .478 with 3 aces. USC used a 4-0 run in the third set to build a 9-6 lead that UCSD could not overcome, as Troy hit .409 in the set with 4 aces (the Tritons hit .042).
USC returns to action on Sunday (April 3) for the final home match of 2016 when it hosts No. 14 UC Irvine at 7 p.m. PT in a match that will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles. USC's 4 seniors—Josh Kirchner, Tommy Leonard, Alex Slaught and Brooks Varni—will be saluted after the match.
