USC Varsity Eight Moves Ahead to NCAA Petite Final

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked USC women's rowing team completed the second day of competition at the 2016 NCAA Championships on the waters of Lake Natoma on Saturday, May 28. The Trojans' varsity eight advanced to the I Eights Petite Final while the second varsity eight and varsity four placed into C finals in their respective divisions.
USC's varsity eight placed fifth in its A/B semifinal and will race in the petite final at 10:48 a.m. on Sunday, May 29, to conclude the championships. The second varsity eight placed third in its C/D semifinal and will race in the II Eights C final at 8:48 a.m. The varsity four finished in second place in its C/D semifinal to earn a spot in the Fours C final and will race at 8:24 a.m. to open the final day of racing at the championship regatta.
In the I Eights A/B semifinal, the first 500 meters was hotly contested among all six boats, but two halves separated as crews approached the midway mark. Down the stretch, Stanford held on to win the semifinal with a time of 6:18.911 but a photo finish placed Brown (6:19.515) in second, Princeton in third (6:19.550), and Texas in fourth by a hair (6:19.640). The Trojans battled Washington in the second group and stayed ahead to finish fifth (6:25.431) to the Huskies' 6:26.754.
In the II Eights C/D semifinal, Duke cleared the 500-meter mark first and maintained a healthy lead on the rest of the field. The Trojans fought with Syracuse for second place but were edged in the end as Duke finished first (6:41.080), the Orange second (6:44.991) and USC in third (6:45.622). The Women of Troy weren't threatened by the back of the pack as Navy finished in fourth (6:57.753) and Jacksonville crossed the line at 7:23.625 in fifth place.
USC's varsity four got out of the gate for an early lead in the Fours C/D semifinal, but Duke made up ground over the next 500 meters. Into the final 750 meters, the Blue Devils created separation and finished first with a time of 7:24.262. The Trojans staved off an attack by Navy to finish second at 7:28.344 with a couple of seats over the Midshipmen (7:30.597). Central Florida finished in fourth at 7:51.294 and Rhode Island crossed last at 7:54.938.
