No. 6 Trojans Dominate in 2-0 Victory Over Colorado
October 13, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Senior goalkeeper Julia Murphy tallied her first career shutout win in her first start.
LOS ANGELES – Two first half goals were all the No. 6 Trojans needed, as the defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Julia Murphy making her first collegiate start took care of the rest, leading the Trojans to a 2-0 victory over visiting Colorado on Friday afternoon.
The Trojans (11-1-1, 5-0-1 Pac-12) got a goal in the sixth minute by Alex Anthony, as she finished one off in the box off an assist by Tara McKeown, who is tied for the team lead in that category with five. For Anthony, the eventual game-winner was her fifth finish of the season, the most on the team.
Just 11 minutes later in the 17th minute the Trojans made it a 2-0 game, as Sydney Sladek took a beautiful feed from Savannah DeMelo and slotted it home. For the senior Sladek it was her first goal of the season and for the redshirt freshman DeMelo, the assist ties her with McKeown for the team lead of five.
Throughout the remaining 73 minutes of play the Trojans continued to dominate the run of play, outshooting the Buffaloes (7-5-3, 1-4-1 Pac-12) 23-9, tallying five corner kicks to the Buffs' three.
The Trojan defense was lockdown as they solidified their sixth shutout of the season, despite being without center back Dominique Randle and goalkeeper Kaylie Collins. Freshman Jessica Haidet slide into the back line seamlessly for Randle, who was sitting out the match due to a red card in the previous game. Goalkeeper Collins, who was hampered by an injury, gave way to senior Julia Murphy who was outstanding in her first career start, making her presence known early with a punch out of a ball played in off a Buffalo corner kick. Overall she tallied a career-high three saves in the match.
DeMelo, Anthony and junior Erika Okuma led the way for the Trojans with four shots apiece. Okuma had a great chance late in the match as she connected deep in the box off a cross, but missed as her shot banged off the crossbar.
The Trojans will be back in action next Thursday, Oct. 19, as they travel to Washington to play at Huskies.
