Anthony’s Brace Sets Up No. 6 USC’s Sixth Pac-12 Win In 2-0 Shutout At Washington
October 19, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Alex Anthony breaks through in the fifth minute to help key the Trojans’ road win in Seattle.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The No. 6 USC women's soccer team battled the elements and prevailed to scoop up the Trojans' sixth Pac-12 win of 2017. Undefeated in conference action, USC got two power moves from Alex Anthony to net a brace for the senior and anchor a 2-0 road win for the Trojans over host Washington today in Seattle. The victory improves USC's unbeaten streak to 11 while taking the Trojans to 12-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in Pac-12 play. The 12-1-1 start to 2017 matches the previous best, when the Trojans held that same mark to open the 2008 campaign.
"This was a great and hard-fought win for the team on the road," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said. "Alex Anthony was fantastic in the first half, and I thought our back line was exceptional at holding off Washington the rest of the night."
Amidst a first-half downpour, the Trojans were able to withstand early pressure from the Huskies and turn the tide thanks for Alex Anthony's opening strike. Leah Pruitt's first attempt and hunting down Anthony in the box was just off the mark, but minutes later it was Jalen Woodward who served a ball into the box for the goal-savvy senior. Anthony collected it in front of goal, held her ground and turned and fired to the far netting to lift her Trojans ahead 1-0 in just the fifth minute of play. Later in the half it was Nicole Molen who put a dangerous ball on frame, zipping in a header that was hauled in by the Washington goalkeeping. Then, it was Anthony who stepped up her harassment of the Husky defense. Another power move saw Anthony snap off another swift shot, but it was tipped over the bar. Soon after, Anthony let rip another hard shot, this one clanging the post. Next, Pruitt found her mark, and Anthony got a solid foot on another ball right in front of the goal. It was smothered by the Husky keeper, but got loose and fell for Anthony, who hammered it home uncontested to take USC to a 2-0 advantage in the 34th minute of play.
The two-goal first half marked the first multi-goal game for the senior this season, taking her to a total of three multi-goal games as a Trojan. She now has scored seven goals in 2017 — three go which have now been game-winners.
In the second half the rain subsided, and so did the goal scoring. USC was still firing, though, outshooting the Huskies 6-1 in the second half of action. Amanda Rooney had two of those, taking a feed from Sydney Sladek and delivering a line drive to force a UW save before sending in a header minutes later. Ashleigh Plumptre was active on the left side in creating opportunities for the Trojans, but USC would be unable to crack the Washington defense in the final 45.
USC now turns to a trip to Pullman to take on Washington State. The Trojans and the Cougars are set to square off in a 12 p.m. matchup on Sunday (Oct. 22) in a clash that will air live on Pac-12 Washington. LIVE STREAMING also will be available to Pac-12 Networks subscribers.
