No. 6 USC Sweeps Up Another Road Win With 2-1 Decision At WSU
October 22, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Leah Pruitt scores one and assists on the game-winner from Ashleigh Plumptre.
PULLMAN, WASH. — USC sophomore Ashleigh Plumptre made her first career goal a memorable one as her touch in the 41st minute proved the difference in the No. 6 Trojans' 2-1 road win at Washington State today. The victory keeps USC undefeated in conference play as the Trojans improve to 13-1-1 overall and to 7-0-1 in Pac-12 play while riding a 12-game unbeaten streak.
"Today was a really gritty performance by our team," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said. "I'm very proud of the way that we were able to manage the game and come out with a win against a fabulous and very tough-minded WSU team."
Washington State's defense robbed the Trojans of a couple potential goals, most notably with a heroic saving clearance off the line in the fourth minute. Tara McKeown had fed Alex Anthony up top, and the senior collected it an fired off a brilliant chip to clear the keeper, but WSU's defender tracked it down just in time to get a foot on it at the goal line. Four minutes later, however, USC was able to break through. This time it was Anthony with the setup, touching the ball perfectly at the top of the area for Leah Pruitt, who slammed a left-footed shot to the right post to net a 1-0 advantage for the Trojans in the eighth minute of action.
That lead would hold up for another 20 minutes before WSU came up with the equalizer, leveling the game at 1-1 with a nice shot to the left post in the 29th minute. USC was undeterred, however, and continued to create chances. In the 41st minute, the Trojans jumped back into the lead. This one was set up by Pruitt, who sailed a tasty centering pass to the far post, where Ashleigh Plumptre was ready to pounce. The sophomore got a toe to the ball and poked it through to tally her first career goal as a Trojans and lift USC to a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, WSU registered another goal-saving clearance off the line early on, this time turning away a close-range shot from Amanda Rooney in the 48th minute. Savannah DeMelo was causing headaches for the WSU defense to key the USC attack, but the Trojans were unable to break through. USC's defense remained similarly stingy, with the Trojan back line holding its ground well. In the 81st minute, Pruitt was called into defensive action with a header clearance on the line to save a potential WSU equalizer. At the other end, Anthony manufactured back-to-back strikes, but the WSU keeper was up to the challenge and made the clutch save to keep the Trojans at bay in the final stretch, keeping the scoreline as a 2-1 Trojan victory.
USC will now return home to McAlister Field to set up for two big Pac-12 tests. The Trojans will face California at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 26) in a Pac-12 Networks televised matchup. On Sunday (Oct. 29), USC will celebrate its graduating Trojans with a Senior Day celebration before taking on Stanford at 3 p.m. for USC's final home game of the regular season.
