No. 5 USC Nets Key Pac-12 Win With Shutout Of No. 16 Cal
October 26, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Sophomore Ashleigh Plumptre scores a golazo for her second straight game-winner.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — USC sophomore Ashleigh Plumptre turned the tables on what had been more of a chess match between No. 5 USC and visiting No. 16 California with a booming blast to the upper V in the 53rd minute. That rocket would register as the game-winner — the second straight from the sophomore off the bench — as the Trojans notched their eighth shutout of the year with the 1-0 win over the Golden Bears today at McAlister Field. USC remains unbeaten in Pac-12 play, boasting a 14-1-1 overall record and an 8-0-1 mark in conference action.
"Great win today," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said of the 1-0 win over the Golden Bears. "Cal is a fantastic defensive team and is so dangerous on counters. I'm very happy with the way we competed today."
The Cal back line turned away the Trojans on numerous occasions, blocking and deflecting USC blasts before they had a chance to test the Cal goalkeeper. USC's defense was similarly stalwart in keeping the Bears to just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of action. In the 38th minute, Leah Pruitt forced a Cal turnover and muscled her way back to key a Trojan attack that saw Savannah DeMelo fire off a shot that was stuffed by the Cal defense once again. That was USC's last best chance of the half, and the first stretch came to a scoreless close.
In the second half, USC kept pushing and in the 53rd the Trojans finally broke the game's scoring silence. Alex Anthony bodied down the ball and poked it to Amanda Rooney, who popped the ball up to Ashleigh Plumptre. She'd carry it toward goal, working through defenders before letting loose a right-footed ripper, taking it from outside the 18 and tucking into the top corner of the goal for an undisputed 1-0 USC lead.
Dominique Randle, Tara McKeown, Ally Prisock and Julia Bingham locked things down on the defensive end, getting a brave stop from goalkeeper Kaylie Collins in the 88th minute as the sophomore hauled in a dangerous ball into the box. Cal had gotten as close as can be with a strong shot that slammed the crossbar minutes earlier. In the 89th, Anthony sacrificed her body to block a late Cal shot attempt, and USC was able to control things in the final moments.
The Trojans now ride a 13-match unbeaten streak into their next matchup, where USC will host No. 1 Stanford at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 29). USC will celebrate is 2017 senior class in a Senior Day ceremony prior to that conference clash, where the top spot in the Pac-12 standings goes up for grabs.
