No. 5 USC Sees Unbeaten Streak Snapped By No. 1 Stanford
October 29, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Trojans take their first loss in 14 games with a 3-1 defeat from the Cardinal.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 5 USC women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the nation's top-ranked team on Senior Day at McAlister Field. The Trojans had a speedy response to No. 1 Stanford's opening goal, equalizing within 33 seconds of the Cardinal's 15th-minute score. But Stanford managed another one before halftime and struck again on a free kick in the second half to notch a 3-1 win over the host Trojans today. The loss snaps USC's 13-game unbeaten streak and stands as the Trojans' first Pac-12 loss on the year. USC is now 14-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in Pac-12 play. Stanford improves to 17-1-0, 10-0-0.
"Today I was very pleased with our performance in terms of the way we competed," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said. "Stanford is a fantastic team and when you make mistakes, they're going to capitalize on them. This is great for us moving forward as we prepare for UCLA and hopefully postseason. I couldn't ask for more. I thought that Dom Randle and Ally Prisock were absolutely fantastic today. It's probably the best that Dom has been in her career."
USC redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Collins was called into duty for seven saves today — one off her career best — while also making many brave stops to squash dangerous Cardinal attacks. So, too, did the USC back line come up big in corralling the Cardinal strikers as they tried to catch the Trojans in transition. Stanford's first goal came off a header at the far post off a Cardinal cross in the 15th minute, but USC was unshaken by the strike and fired right back. Just 33 seconds later, the Trojans had equalized. Leah Pruitt's hard work on the wing earned a corner kick for the Trojan cause. The Cardinal almost had it clear until Julia Bingham interrupted, gathering the ball at the top of the area and pinging it in for Sydney Myers. Fresh off her Senior Day celebration along with eight other Trojans, Myers jumped on her chance, turning and fired to the far post to tangle up the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute of play.
Collins would make a pair of impressive saves to turn away Stanford later, only to have a Cardinal cross curl in and catch the far netting to lift Stanford back into the lead, up 2-1 in the 26th minute. USC would continue to create chances down the stretch while working hard to neutralize the Cardinal. Erika Okuma made a great tackle to stop Stanford on the sideline in the 36th minute, and Collins made yet another athletic save in the 43rd to hold things at 2-1 Stanford by halftime.
In the second, more bold moves from Collins would halt Stanford's hopes of padding its lead, while Alex Anthony, Leah Pruitt, Ashleigh Plumptre and Nicole Molen caused trouble for the Stanford back line, although the Trojans just couldn't break through to find the back of the net. In the 63rd, Stanford lined up a free kick after a Trojan foul. Set up straight on goal from 24 yards out, Stanford would loop in a perfect curling free kick over the wall and in to bump the Cardinal's lead up to 3-1. USC worked hard to try to carve into the deficit, but to no avail, and the Trojans were on the losing end of the final scoreline for the first time since early September.
USC now turns its focus to its regular-season finale, coming up next week with a trip to Westwood. The Trojans are due to tangle with crosstown rival UCLA at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 3) at Drake Stadium.
