Kristen Simon leads all scorers with 20 points for the Trojans.
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. — Behind a season-high 20 points from senior forward Kristen Simon, the USC women's basketball team bested the host Santa Clara Broncos, 64-43, at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif., on Friday evening (Nov. 17). With the victory, the Women of Troy improve to 3-0 in the young season, while Santa Clara falls to 1-2 overall.
Simon shot 8-for-16 from the floor for game-high scoring honors and added 5 rebounds, while sophomore guard Minyon Moore just missed out on a double-double with 12 points and 9 assists to go along with 3 steals. Junior guard Aliyah Mazyck added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, while redshirt senior guard Jordan Adams scored 4 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. In addition, sophomore forward Ja'Tavia Tapley added 9 points in just 15 minutes of action.
The Women of Troy held the Broncos well below their season scoring average of 68.5 points per game and forced the home team to just 32.0% shooting (16 for 50). USC also held the Broncos' leading scorer Kyla Martin to just 8 points on 3-for-7 shooting. In all, USC shot 48% from the field in the game and forced 20 Bronco turnovers. The Women of Troy also ruled the paint, outscoring the Broncos by a 40 to 20 margin and in fast break points (12-0). USC is now 4-0 all-time against Santa Clara all-time in the series with the win.
The Women of Troy came out of the gates hot to begin the first quarter, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead behind five quick points from Simon and a pull-up jumper in the lane by Moore. The Broncos would make consecutive baskets to take the lead at 8-6, but a fast break bucket by Moore and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Mazyck would put USC in front, 17-12 at the end of one. Simon would finish the first frame with 8 points.
The second quarter was more of the same for USC, as consecutive fast break conversions by Moore and Mazyck followed by a layup by Tapley would extend the Trojan lead to nine at 26-15. USC would double up on the Broncos, 30-15, after Simon entered double-figures with a layup in the paint. Just before the half, Mazyck would nab another steal and then follow up with her second three of the half to give USC the 34-17 lead at the break. By the end of the first 20 minutes, the Trojans shot 51.9% from the floor compared to Santa Clara's 38.1%, while Simon had 10 points and Moore was officially on double-double watch with 8 points and 7 assists to go along with 3 boards and 3 steals.
To start the second half, the Broncos immediately applied hard defensive pressure on the Women of Troy, but USC turned up its own defensive intensity and forced two quick turnovers to begin the third quarter. Simon once again dominated the post, scoring on two tough plays in traffic and adding two free throws to bring the Trojan lead to 18 at 43-25 with three minutes left in the quarter. Tapley would do some more work in the paint, grabbing a tough offensive rebound and finishing the putback to give USC a 20-point cushion just seconds later. One final three pointer made by Tapley made the score 48-30 after three periods. The Women of Troy would then run away with the game in the fourth quarter, building as big as a 25-point lead with less than three minutes to go. The final Trojan basket was scored by Tapley and assisted by Moore, her 9th of the game, to make the final score 64-43 in favor of the visiting Women of Troy.
