USC Women Work Up A 78-57 Win Over Marist In Honolulu
November 25, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Mazyck leads a balanced USC attack for another win at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
HONOLULU, HAWAI'I — The USC women's basketball team turned on the afterburners once again to leave another opponent in the dust at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Marist had the advantage at the end of the first quarter, only to see the Trojans light it up in the next three frames to forge a path to a 78-57 victory that holds USC undefeated at 6-0 on the season. Marist goes to 1-4 with the loss to the Trojans.
Kristen Simon's 1,000th career point came as the Trojans moved to an early lead in the second quarter, where USC made a power move to take a 35-23 halftime advantage over Marist. The Trojans were shooting 39.3 percent from the floor in that first half, bettering the 35.7 percent from Marist while the Trojans also nailed five 3-pointers in that first 20-minute span. USC also was doing well to get to the stripe, going 8-of-10 from the free-throw line to help the Trojan cause in the first half, while Marist was unable to earn any visits to the line. USC would heat up further to finish out the game shooting at a 47.4 percent clip, outpacing Marist's 41 percent. The Red Foxes landed nine 3-pointers in the game to edge out USC's eight, but the Trojans' total team effort was too much for Marist to match.
USC would finish up with four Trojans in double digits, led by Aliyah Mazyck's 21 points and eight rebounds, while Simon added to her 1,000 in finishing up with 16 points. Minyon Moore tallied 17 points and added six assists, and Sadie Edwards delivered 11 points for the Trojans. Marist received 16 points from Rebekah Hand and 10 from Maura Fitzpatrick. USC also outrebounded the Red Foxes 377-27 in the win.
Aliyah Mazyck got the Trojans going in the first frame with five points for the Trojan cause out the gates, but Marist fired off a 7-0 rally soon after to nudge into the lead. Mazyck would drain a buzzer-beating three at the close of the first, but that just cut Marist's lead down to one as USC trailed 15-14 after 10 minutes of action. In the second, Kristen Simon earned a trip to the free-throw line and dumped in a pair of tosses to give the Trojans back the lead and register the senior's 1,000th career points. Mazyck's third three of the half came minutes later, sparking a 9-0 USC scoring surge to lead it 27-17 with 4:28 on the clock in the second quarter. Before the end of the half, Ja'Tavia Tapley and Jordan Adams would join USC's 3-point party, with Adams' coming as a buzzer-beater that lifted the Trojans to a 35-23 halftime advantage.
The Trojans would press on in the third, opening up the second half with back-to-back threes from Mazyck and Minyon Moore for a 41-23 USC lead early. Marist responded with a 7-0 push, but the Trojans countered with four different USC scorers contributing the next eight points. In the last 3:30 of the frame it was all USC, with Marist landing just two free throws while Ja'Tavia Tapley, Moore, Simon and Edwards all knocked down shots to build a 57-39 USC lead at the end of the third. In the fourth, USC ballooned its lead to 28- points after Mazyck's fifth 3-pointer and a three-point play form Edwards. Marist would continue to fire off threes, but the Red Foxes couldn't melt away the Trojans' lead as USC wrapped up a 78-59 final victory.
The win not only keeps USC undefeated in these early goings of 2017-18, it pushes head coach Mark Trakh to 399 career victories. One away from a milestone 400th career win as a head coach, Trakh could well capture that benchmark tomorrow (Nov. 26) when his Trojans face off against host Hawai'i at 7 p.m. PT at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
