USC Women Tally Coach Trakh’s 400th Career Win In Winning Rainbow Wahine Showdown
November 26, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
USC remains perfect with a 7-0 start to the 2017-18 campaign after three wins in Honolulu.
HONOLULU, HAWAI'I — The USC women's basketball team locked up head coach Mark Trakh's 400th career victory and secured the championship trophy at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 71-60 win over host Hawai'i tonight in Honolulu. The lead changed hands seven times in the first half and hit a lull in the third, but the Trojans made a 10-1 rally in the fourth to take control. Season-high scoring efforts from Kristen Simon and Minyon Moore helped USC notch its seventh straight win, staying perfect on the year with a 7-0 mark. Hawai'i goes to 4-3 with the loss to the Trojans.
"I'm proud of the way the team played to win three games in three days. The seniors really stepped up, and Minyon was a real floor general," Trakh said of the 3-0 effort in Honolulu. "Winning 400 games really just means I've been coaching a long time, but all the credit goes to the kids I've coached. I'm really proud of the players I've worked with along the way, and I'm really proud of this USC team."
USC shot 55 percent in the first half, manufacturing a 14-2 scoring run in the last four minutes of the first half to break up a back-and-forth battle to that point. Aliyah Mazyck had landed four 3-pointers in the first half to match Kristen Simon's 15 first-half points down low, while Minyon Moore was tearing it up to the hoop for 11 points by halftime.
USC slumped in the third and scored just nine points on 17 percent shooting, but the fourth saw the Trojans hit an uptick and go 40 percent from the floor, making that all-important 10-1 surge to leave Hawai'i out of reach. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 42.9 percent from the floor to Hawai'i's 42 percent. The Trojans nailed six 3-pointers in all, doubling up on the host's three. Hawai'i did win out on the boards 35-31.
USC had three in double digits tonight, led by Kristen Simon's career-high 25 points and Minyon Moore's season-high 20. Aliyah Mazyck added 16 points and hit four threes. Hawai'i was led by Lahni Salanoa's 17 points, with 10 from Tia Kanoa.
Kristen Simon was named MVP of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown, with Aliyah Mazyck also named to the All-Tournament Team.
It was a see-saw battle in the first 10 minutes as USC saw an early five-point lead melt away as Hawai'i got hot from beyond the arc. Back-to-back Hawai'i buckets nudged the hosts into the lead with 5:31 on the clock, and then the lead would trade hands back and forth for the next two minutes. Aliyah Mazyck would answer a Hawai'i three with her first of the night to level things at 19-19 at 2:20, but again the Rainbow Wahine edged into the lead. USC would net a three-point play from Kristen Simon and then another three from Mazyck, and the Trojans gripped a 25-21 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action. In the next stretch, the Rainbow Wahine snarled up the game once again, at 25-25 early in the second quarter. Minutes later, it was still tight with USC holding a two-point lead at 4:05, but the USC defense stiffened from there. Hawai'i managed only one more basket in the next four minutes, while USC poured out 14 more points as Mazyck and Moore joined Simon in double digits along the way to a 46-32 USC lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw a slow start at both ends, with just one field goal apiece falling in the first five minutes of action. After Simon converted down low for the Trojans, Moore went to the stripe and converted, boosting USC ahead 51-35 at the midway point of the third. Hawai'i would keep clicking, however, outscoring USC 10-3 in the last stretch of the third to trim the Trojan lead to 55-45 at the end of the third. In the fourth, USC finally found a groove again and constructed a 10-1 rally topped off by Moore's first 3-pointer of the night, and the Trojans held a 68-50 lead with 5:30 to go. That was enough to keep the Rainbow Wahine at bay, and USC closed out a 71-60 victory to tally a 7-0 start as well as Trakh's 400th career win.
The Trojans now return to Los Angeles, visiting LMU for a 7 p.m. game on Friday (Dec. 1).
