Moore Hits 34 As USC Women Stay Perfect With 80-70 Win At LMU
December 01, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans improve to 8-0 while Moore matches Cheryl Miller’s program-best effort from the line with 21 free throws made.
WESTCHESTER, Calif. — In a fiercely contested battle between two of the nation's unbeaten programs, it was the USC women's basketball team who came away unscathed and emerged victorious with an 80-70 victory over host Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion on Friday evening (Dec. 1). The win pushes USC's record to a perfect 8-0 this season, while the Lions fall to 7-1 overall.
Behind a career-high 34 points from sophomore guard Minyon Moore, the Trojans withstood a number of Lion scoring runs in the final three quarters of the game to secure their eighth win in a row and their fourth straight over LMU in the all-time series. For USC, Moore had a game-high 34 points on an incredible 21-of-23 shooting night from the free-throw line to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Moore's 34 points were the most scored by any USC player since Ariya Crook did so in 2014. In addition, her 21 free throws made matches the single-game program record set by Trojan great Cheryl Miller in 1985. Moore's 23 free throws attempted was also the second most in a single game all-time at USC.
Senior Kristen Simon added 16 points for the Trojan cause and hauled in 10 rebounds for a double-double — the 20th of her Trojan career — while junior Aliyah Mazyck scored 13 points on three 3-pointers with five rebounds. Senior Sadie Edwards chipped in eight points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Redshirt senior Jordan Adams recorded nine boards and had four assists on the night.
The host Lions came into Friday's game holding opponents to 36.0 percent shooting from the field, but the Women of Troy managed to put up a 44.4-percent shooting clip (24-of-54) on the night. In turn, USC forced LMU into a 37.5 percent shooting percentage for the game (27-of-72) and just 4-of-21 from 3-point range (19.0%). LMU missed 15 free throws, while USC made 27 of 35 from the line (77.1%). Cheyanne Wallace paced the Lions with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Gabby Green followed with 19 points and six rebounds. No other LMU player scored in double figures.
Just like the Women of Troy, LMU sported an unblemished record of 7-0 in the early season, but that mark looked to be in immediate danger after USC scored the first four points of the game and extended that lead to ten at 14-4 just six minutes in. Mazyck scored half of the team's points on 3-for-3 shooting during that 10-0 run, while sophomore Ja'Tavia Tapley got in on the scoring action in the first quarter with a free throw and an and-one to extend the USC lead to 18-5. The Trojan defense would hold the Lions to zero field goals in the last 7:30 of the period. LMU would end the first quarter shooting 1-for-14 from the floor in the first quarter, as USC ran out to the 20-7 lead after one.
It would be a much different second quarter for the Lions though, as they found their scoring touch and responded with four quick points to open up the second. Tapley would bury a three to end that run and give the Trojans the lead, 29-11, but foul trouble plagued both teams with Moore and Tapley being forced to sit with three fouls each for USC. LMU then rushed out to a 5-0 run and would eventually cut their deficit to ten at 30-20, but USC answered with a jumper in the lane by Edwards and an extra freethrow. Adams would then hit her first field goal of the game before the end of the half, and at intermission, the Trojans held the 35-25 advantage. Edwards led USC with eight points and five boards, followed by Tapley and Mazyck with seven points each and Simon and Moore with six and five, respectively.
To start the second half, the Trojans hit a slump in the opening minutes of that third quarter, while the Lions once again found a groove to go on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 35-35, forcing head coach Mark Trakh to call a timeout. However, USC would finally break through at the 6:43 mark when Moore converted on a layup and Mazyck netted a corner 3-pointer to push USC's lead back to five, 40-35. Moore then took over the final five minutes of third quarter, hitting a three and then a contested layup to energize the Trojans' 10-0 run of their own to make the score 49-39. After LMU was forced to call a timeout, Moore continued her rampage and completed a three-point play and added two more freethrows to extend the Trojan lead, 54-41. She would finish with 14 points in the third quarter alone, giving USC the 56-45 lead after three.
The Lions would not go away though, this time going on a 6-0 unanswered run to begin the fourth quarter. Moore ended that momentum with two from the line and Simon struck in the post to reach 12 points in the game, giving USC some breathing room at 60-51. Mazyck and Moore would then be pulled from the game with four personal fouls each to put LMU in the bonus with 7:37 remaining, but the Lions bailed the Trojans out with a string of missed free throws. LMU's Green scored with a layup in the paint to cut the home team's deficit to six, but Mazyck hit a timely three point shot as the shot clock buzzer sounded with 3:39 remaining to make it a nine point game, 65-56. A missed Lion jumper was rebounded by Simon and LMU was forced to foul the rest of the way. The final 1:30 of the game saw Moore sink 11-of-12 free throws, including 10 in a row, to put her over the 30-point mark for just the second time in her career. In all, the sophomore hit a remarkable 21-of-23 at the line. Moore would finish the game with one last fast break layup before the final horn sounded to give her a career-high 34 points and lift the Trojans to a gritty 80-70 victory on the road.
The Women of Troy will now get a two-week break from competition before hosting their next game at Galen Center against nationally ranked Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15.
